Finding the right shoe repair shop can be tricky—especially when you're a wheelchair user looking for both craftsmanship and accessibility. On a recent visit to Messina’s Shoe Repairs in Grapevine, I had a specific goal in mind: getting a pair of boots fixed so I could finally start wearing them more regularly. Along the way, I also got a first-hand look at how accessible (or not) the shop was for people like me.

A Step Inside—Literally

When I arrived at Messina’s, I immediately noticed a small step at the entrance. It wasn't ideal, but fortunately, my wheelchair was able to clear it without issue. Still, I could see how other wheelchair users, especially those with larger or manual chairs, might have a harder time getting inside. Once through the door, I found that while the store was small, it was fairly easy to move around—thanks in part to it not being too busy when I visited.

A Personal Boot Story

Not too long ago, I bought a pair of Ariat boots made specifically for wheelchair users. While the fit was decent, they needed some adjustments to be more comfortable and functional for me. Knowing Messina’s had a reputation for working with leather, I hoped they could help.

The staff was friendly and attentive, and when I explained what I needed, they were upfront and honest. Although they do regular boot repairs, the type of custom work I was asking for required tools and techniques they didn’t have in-store. Instead of turning me away without direction, the staff kindly recommended a shop in the Fort Worth Stockyards that might be better equipped to help. I appreciated their honesty and the helpful referral, even if I left without getting my boots fixed that day.

Final Thoughts

Messina’s Shoe Repairs might be small, but it’s relatively accessible and staffed with people who truly care about helping. While the entrance step and limited space might be a challenge for some, the personalized service and honest advice made a big difference in my experience.

🟢 4 out of 5 rating.

Friendly staff and a mostly accessible space, but that small step at the entrance could be a barrier for some wheelchair users.
