Living with accessibility needs means constantly exploring new tools and devices that can enhance independence and simplify daily tasks. Over time, I’ve come across some incredible items that make a real difference—and one that didn’t quite meet my expectations. Here’s a closer look at these tools and how they impact my life.

Accessible Boots from Ariat

My journey with Ariat’s Accessible Boots was one of excitement and tempered expectations. My cousin sent me a link to these boots, which open from the back, making them easier to put on for people in wheelchairs. Thrilled by the idea of a company catering to accessibility needs in the footwear industry, I eagerly ordered a pair.

When they arrived, I was impressed by how lightweight and stylish they were. However, once I tried them on, I ran into a problem: my legs couldn’t bend far enough back for my feet to rest flat on my wheelchair footrest. While I appreciate Ariat’s effort to create something for people like me, the design didn’t fully meet my specific needs.

I’m not giving up on these boots, though. I plan to take them to a boot repair store to see if they can be adjusted to work for me. I still admire Ariat for taking a step toward inclusivity, and I hope to see more accessible options in the future.

Giraffe Water Bottle

Staying hydrated can be tricky when you’re in a wheelchair, but the Giraffe Water Bottle from Amazon has been a game-changer. Its extra-long straw allows me to place the bottle on the back of my wheelchair while still being able to drink water whenever I need to.

This simple but clever design has made a huge difference in my daily routine. I no longer have to ask for help every time I feel thirsty, which is a big step toward independence. If you’re looking for a practical hydration solution, I can’t recommend this water bottle enough.

Miniature Tabletop Cornhole Game

While this isn’t a traditional accessibility device, this tiny tabletop cornhole game has brought so much joy into my life. My dad loves finding unique and quirky items, and this game is a perfect example.

It’s small and easy to use, making it accessible for me to play without any modifications. Plus, the mini cornhole bags flying around have become a favorite for my cat, who loves chasing them. It’s a fun and lighthearted addition to my collection of accessible-friendly activities.

Electric Nail Clipper

Cutting my nails used to be a task I always needed help with. Traditional nail clippers just weren’t easy for me to use. Enter the electric nail clipper, a device that has completely transformed this small but essential part of my routine.

With this tool, I can now cut my nails independently. Not only does it simplify the process, but it also gives me a sense of self-sufficiency. It’s one of those devices that proves how small innovations can make a big difference in someone’s life.

Conclusion

Accessibility is a constant journey of finding tools and devices that work for you. While not every item is a perfect fit right away, the process of exploring these options is empowering. From practical tools like the Giraffe Water Bottle and electric nail clippers to fun additions like the miniature tabletop cornhole game, these items all add value to my life in different ways.

Though my experience with Ariat’s Accessible Boots wasn’t perfect, it’s encouraging to see companies stepping up to design for inclusivity. I’m hopeful that with some adjustments, these boots will soon become a staple in my wardrobe.
